Graffiti: From Vandalism to Contemporary Art
April 21st 2009In conjunction with the Urban Art Exhibition featuring the works of Futura, Stash and Phil Frost, a lecture entitled "Graffitti: From Vandalism to Contemporary Art" was given by Cuadro director Bashar Al Shroogi. The talk traced the history of urban art and emphasized the contributions of the three featured artists on the movement. The lecture was followed by a Q& A session and walk-through of the exhibition.
Points discussed included:
- Graffitti as contemporary calligraphy
- The development of a new graphic vernacular
- The factors contributing to the acceptance of graffiti as contemporary art
- Graffiti's role as art's uncensored voice
The Urban Art collection which spans 4 of Cuadro's 9 galleries is part of the Hadiith exhibition on display until July 30th 2009.
